It's official....the holidays are over. We are packing Colin up today to go back to school and that always makes me sad. Taking down the tree is one thing....sending your kid off again is another.
Last night, I went to the beer tender with my little reindeer glass to pour myself a wee bit of brew to sit down and relax. I got the message as the thing only sputtered and spit out beige foam at me....it's over--the holidays are officially d.o.n.e. All the delicious cheeses have been eaten, there are no pistachios left in the cabinet, Christmas cookies.....well, their sorta stale at this point. Sigh. I even went back to the pool this week.
Welcome January blahs.
But, I'm not gonna take that lying down. Nope. I'm moving ahead, planning for the upcoming year. I started buying sheets and towels during the January white sales to get a jump on Em's college stash. I hired a painter to come in and brighten up the family room. We even started talking about this summer's plans and what we hope to accomplish in the way of fun. No use sitting around being gloomy, right?
And then we got our first paychecks with the increase in our social security deductions. (insert needle-scratching-the-record sound) Yea. OUCH.
I'M TRYING TO BE POSITIVE HERE, PEOPLE!! Really. I am.
Did anyone notice the days are getting longer....?(OMG, they ARE longer!)

Yes! I did notice that days are lengthening and I like it! I do NOT like taking the kids back after breaks though. SAD!
As my hog-farmer friend and neighbor says, "As the day lengthens, the winter strengthens." He is, of course, correct. At least we have garden catalogs to look at and dream of those beautiful summer days that we love around here. This time of year, the skies are mostly overcast with with leaden gray. Bleech!
Ugh, I hear ya! Just got your comment...
Mid January always does this to me- reality slaps you, is what it feels like. The holidays are so magical and filled with hopes and dreams for the "New" year when the reality is, it's just more of the same. Sigh. Glad to hear you're finding ways to look at it positively though!
It snowed all day yesterday. I put my back out again; third time in two weeks. The temperatures are dropping to below zero...oh I'm supposed to be POSITIVE. The sun is out?
The days are getting longer. Aren't they?
Liz--Yeah, it's hard when they first come home, but then I'm really sad when they leave again. This is crazy to get used to!
Chuck--I just wish we had snow. I think that would help a bit. This dreary is awful.
Nancy--I'm trying to get my spring stuff in gear so we are ready when it comes. I always wait and then I regret it.
Patty--We haven't had any sign of winter here and it is very depressing. It's not cold, it's not snowing, the pond is not frozen. While that sounds great, it is not. It's very weird. I hope you feel better.
Vanilla--I changed that sentence 3 times...I don't know what I think it is doing anymore. It's lighter later, but it feels like the days are lasting FOREVER. I'm a mess. Forgive me, person-who-is-in-sunnier-places-than-I.
I wrote about being in slow motion at the moment. Hope it gets better and we find normal again.
I'm just glad my routine is back to normal. I hate the holidays!
I hear that, in a wave of solidarity with the American people, Congress voted for higher taxes for themselves, a pay cut and a reduction in benefits to help pay off the national debt without placing the entire burden on the American people.
Who am I kidding?! Hahahahahahaha, they did no such thing!
:(
January is my least favourite month, followed closely by February. I hear ya sistah! Reality after the holidays sucks, it's cold, it's dark...blah! However, I too try and look ahead to better months ahead ..... Like summer, and plan fun activities for the future! Have a good weekend!
i love winter, i'm o.k with the changing seasons!!
i enjoy my time indoors!!
January is usually that month that drags on and on. But here we are with it almost half over. There just never seems to be enough time to do everything I want to do! Hope you are having a nice weekend!
xo Catherine
I'm actually halfway ready for the holidays to be over and to "only" have work and school to worry about, instead of Christmas and a wedding! Thanks for your comments on my blog :)
Simone--Yeah, but we have to get through February and March too. Bummer.
Daisy--yeah, but don't you like all those boxes? and crinkly wrapping paper? We do. The kitties are sad that it's back to boring around here.
Rebecca--I was like "whaaaaaa?"--and then I finished reading. That would be a cold day in hell, right?
Hot Rocks--I'm moving on with spring cleaning and house projects. Otherwise I will turn into a slug!
Debbie--I like the seasons too. In fact, I'm missing the cold and snow this year. It's just not WINTER. :(
Catherine--I think March is worse...it goes on FOR.EV.ER.
Impetua--You had a LOT on your plate, pally! Now you just have the rest of your lives to look forward to! :)
Yes, the days are longer! I guess I should be glad I get small enough paychecks that the increase doesn't hurt much. My SIL says the SS payments now come through marked as "a benefit," as if it was something the government was giving out to be nice rather than money that belongs to the recipient.
